
We tend to celebrate the people who save the system, but rarely the team that prevents the crisis from happening in the first place. This article explores that paradox through data engineering, Antarctic expeditions, counterfactual reasoning, Goodhart’s Law, and the way organizations measure leadership. Sometimes the strongest evidence of good leadership is remarkably uneventful: the pipeline ran, the dashboard was right, the model received clean features, and everyone went home on time.
